Cryoport, a provider of temperature-controlled supply chain solutions for the life sciences sector, has officially completed the divestiture of its specialty courier business, CRYOPDP.1 The recipient: DHL, one of the logistics’ industry’s powerhouses. The deal is headlined by cash payments to Cryoport worth approximately $200 million.
Strategic partnership to expand global life sciences supply chain services
Aside from this transaction—which had been originally announced2 in April—the parties have formed a strategic partnership to strengthen their supply chain service offerings for the global life sciences and healthcare sector.
The new collaboration allows the companies to collaborate on a multitude of ventures, by combining Cryoport's specialized supply chain solution know-how with DHL's health logistics services that it has at its disposal. That end product comes via the combination of specialized pharma logistics and services to the life science and healthcare market sector that continues its upward trajectory.
"Our strategic partnership and this transaction mark a significant step that contributes to the continued evolution of our industry and aligns with Cryoport's long-term strategic vision,” stated Jerrell Shelton, CEO of Cryoport. “With this partnership, we are enhancing our core capabilities as we develop a strong global partner network. We believe this partnership with DHL will enhance our positioning in the Asia Pacific (APAC) and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions, where it will reshape our competitive profile.
“It provides for greater opportunities to offer highly targeted, top-tier services in these regions in response to growing market demand. Most importantly, it allows us to intensify our focus on advancing our Life Science Services platform globally, particularly in the rapidly growing regenerative medicine market. This strategic partnership and divestiture of CRYOPDP delivers a healthy capital infusion, improves our growth trajectory and places us in a solid position to reach our goal of sustainable, long-term profitability."
DHL strengthens specialized pharma logistics network
This deal also boosts DHL’s capabilities as it pertains to specialized pharma logistics—the courier currently handles over 600,000 shipments annually, and provides services to patients and clients in over 135 countries. DHL Supply Chain hopes to expand upon its pharma network by combining CRYOPDP services with the air services that DHL Express and DHL Global Forwarding bring to the table. The deal also supports its “Strategy 2030” plan, which highlights the value of temperature-controlled networks; first and last mile specialty courier coverage; and integrated solutions.
"The acquisition of CRYOPDP is a pivotal move for our supply chain business as we aim to expand our pharma specialized network to meet the evolving needs of clinical trials, biopharma and cell & gene therapies, in addition to further increasing our footprint in the conventional pharma and life science healthcare segment,” said Oscar de Bok, CEO of DHL Supply Chain at the time of the original announcement. “The acquisition of CRYOPDP and the extended partnership with Cryoport Inc. will enable us to deliver integrated end-to-end solutions, enhancing our service capabilities."
